マーク・ヴァサーロ氏

1992年から日本を拠点に製作活動をされているヴァサーロ氏の作品は、これまでアジア・ヨーロッパの各所芸術団体においても評価が高く、現在注目されている写真家のひとりです。

日本の寺での禅修行の経験もあり、プライベートライフでは毎朝座禅を組み、抹茶を嗜むというヴァッサロー氏。
そんな彼は、花の美は自然がもたらす最高の芸術だと語ります。

この度、メルデザインでは、この繊細で美しい『花』の作品シリーズと、インテリアコーディネートという形でコラボすることが叶いました。

マーク・ヴァサーロについて

 

1971年　イギリス、ロンドン生まれ。

1992年   アートの名門校セントラル・セント・マーチンズを離れる。

この頃から東洋美術に興味を持つ

来日。山梨の山寺にて数ヶ月禅修行

Zen Mind Beginner’s Mindという本に影響を受け、座禅を経験したいという想いから来日。

2001〜2003年　日本・パリを拠点に活動

2015年　ブランドの広告キャンペーン、セレブリティーのポートレートなどを撮影。

・アパレル・運輸運送会社・音楽業界など多岐にわたる。

下田にスタジオを建てる。下田を選んだ訳：Markは生まれも育ちのロンドン生まれのイギリス国籍だが、

両親はマルタ人。その為、子供の頃、夏休みになるとマルタ島に長期滞在していた。

初めて下田を訪れた時、かつて故郷の様に過ごしたマルタ島と想いが重なった。

作品製作に関するエピソード

・金箔を使った作品を作ったきっかけ

谷崎潤一郎の「陰影礼賛」(いんえいらい）を読んでいる中、頭に浮かぶある情景が山寺に住んでいた時の記憶と繋がりました。電気の無い暗闇の中で、わずかな光をも捉える金箔は、時間とともに変わる自然光の中で表情を変え、まるで生きているかの様に神秘的でした。そんな記憶が創作意欲となり、金箔を使った作品が生まれました。

The reason he chose Shimoda area: Mark was born and raised in London, but his parents are Maltese.

・The reason for making art work using gold leaf

While reading Junichiro Tanizaki’s “In Praise of Shadows”, a scene that came to his mind was connected

to his memory in Yamadera.Gold leaf, which captures even the slightest light in the darkness without electricity, changes its expression in the natural light that changes over time, as if it were alive.

It was as mysterious as it was. Such a memory became his motivation to create, and a work using gold 　leaf was born.
